If you are not schedule oriented, disciplined and organized when you're working for yourself i think its really hard to find a balance. if friends want to hang out every day and you agree to it every time, you'renot going to feel like you have a job. if you keep your working hours to the same hours that your friends work (usually 9-5/10-6, etc) working from home means trying to plan like you're “going to work” when you might only be walking to a desk that is 10’ from your bed (um. yeah) if you don’t take it as a serious job then you'll never be able to have a productive day and nobody else will take you seriously. seriously. i’m not a coffeeshop worker and never will be. Creating a space that feels like the place you work is so important. making sure that you are not just sitting at your kitchen table or hanging out on your couch is important, it will be hard for you to be able to figure out where your boundaries are. you need to know when to start working and also when to stop. creating a schedule is essential to productivity. i’m not saying that what i do is correct. that’s not the case. everyone is different but here’s how i schedule my days:
at 6:43AM my alarm goes off, i roll over, grab my phone, browse my emails & check social media. I am out of bed by 6:55, i put on NBC on my way to my kitchen to make coffee in my keurig.
7:00-9:00 I watch the Today Show during which I will: roll out the yoga mat and do morning stretches//light yoga while drinking coffee ((maybe i’ll go for a run at the park if the weather is great)) Make a second k-cup and eat a breakfast of eggs and beans or fruit and peanut butter. Wash my face//moisturize//foundation//blush//eyeshadow primer//Cateye//mascara. I twirl my hair into some sort of cute retro do, depending on how clean my hair is (i never spend more than 5 minutes for hair and 5 minutes for makeup.) i will then ACCESSORIZE: a scarf if the hairstyle calls for it, vintage clip on earrings, my signature necklace, the same 6 bracelets on my left wrist, 4 rings on my left hand & one 3-finger ring on my right.
then i put on my uniform: #retroverisble circle skirt, black gap stretch v neck tee tied up, keds. i don’t normally spend more than a minute thinking about what to wear and getting dressed is usually the last thing i do.
by 9am my tv is off and i am sitting at my desk figuring out what i am doing with my day and looking at my multiple check lists. i’m big on list making. if my intern or seamstress is coming she arrives at 9 and we go over to-do lists and choose a daily playlist. if it’s just me, i put on a season of a tv show i’ve seen a million times (friends, breaking bad, dexter, etc) and work to the episodes instead of music. following a storyline is very productive to me, i don’t watch the shows, i just listen, the characters have become my coworkers. i try to do all of my creative, hands on work in the morning after answering and/or drafting up my daily emails. i have all of my energy in the morning. if i have to go to the garment district to buy fabric or check on production i go now and try to be back by lunch. I like to schedule my client meetings in the morning too. I get very impulsive with what i work on, so if i have a great meeting with a client, i work on something related to them for the rest of the day.
noon: caffeine to get me through the early afternoon
at1230 i eat or order lunch, either a salad with chicken, chinese chicken noodle soup, a wrap or quick vegetable & protein stir fry if i’m eating alone (either scrambled eggs or chicken with cheese). i like to eat protein for lunch because i lose steam in the afternoon.
i’ll drink iced green tea all afternoon and if i really need it, a 3pm coffee to get me through the evening. after 3 is when i resort to my computer work. i can focus better on non-hands on work in the evening. If i’m on a deadline and do not have my seamstress, i will continue sewing in the afternoon.
at 7pm i eat dinner and head back to my desk to either finish a garment, get started on something for tomorrow or do more computer work. i like to start creating dresses but hate finishing them. if i have a lot on my plate, i try to get a bunch of stuff started and deal with the finishing of them another time. i try to keep my alcohol consumption to one day a week, but if i’m having a friend over for dinner we’ll drink red wine. i love hosting.
i never work after midnight. i have to be on a one-night deadline (thank you andra, megan, katy) to work after midnight. i like to watch Jimmy Fallon’s monologue at 1135 and be in bed before midnight. I hate sacrificing sleep because i know that i will never be as productive the following day if i don’t sleep my normal amount.
then i go to sleep and do it all over again. YAY!
